pharmaceuticals.
Assists in emulsion stabilization of water/oil emulsions.
Incorporation:
Disper A81-5C can be incorporated into organic liquids using either high shear or highspeed
types of equipment. Optimum gelling efficiency is obtained when the proper degree
of mechanical, chemical and thermal energy is applied to the system. The mixing
equipment should provide the necessary degree of mechanical and thermal energy. The
required chemical energy is supplied by a polar additive.
Polar Additives
The polar additive acts as a wedge to help open up the clay platelets and make them more
readily available for developing maximum gelation. A polar additive must be used to help
insure against changes in gel strength and obtain highest gelling efficiency.
Types of polar additives Relative amount required based on the weight of dry A81-5C
Methanol/Water (95/5%) 33%
Propylene carbonate (100%)* 33%
Propylene carbonate/Water (95/5%) 33%
Ethanol/Water (95/5%) 50%
Acetone (100%)* 60%
Octylphenoxy polyethoxy ethanol* 75%
*When a water free polar additive is desired.
High Speed Dispersion:
Disper A81-5C is initially mixed with the major organic components followed by
incorporation of the polar additive. The optimum high speed dispersion techniques for
pigments are also optimum for Disper A81-5C. One proven successful approach for
developing optimum performance in an organic system would be to add the following in
the order listed:
(1) Take a portion of the total solvent/resin system (properly balanced) and mix.
(2) Add Disper A81-5C and mix 10 minutes.
(3) Add the required amount of polar additive and mix 5 to 10 minutes.
(4) Add the pigments and dispersing agent.
(5) Incorporate the remaining solvent/resin and other ingredients following standard
practice.
If surface active agents are essential, add shortly after dispersion has begun. It is essential
that Disper A81-5C be subjected to shear forces (to produce full gel development) prior to
possible interference from the surface active agent.
High Shear Equipment (ball mill, roller mill, colloid mill, homogenizer, etc.) procedure:
In general, is similar to that shown above for high-speed dispersion. However, it has been
found useful at times to pre-dampen the Disper A81-5C with the required dosage and type
of polar additive in cases where a ball mill, roller mill or pebble mill is employed. The predampened
gellant is then incorporated in a manner which is appropriate for the particular
piece of equipment being used.
Recommended dosage:
The amount of Disper A81-5C required depends upon the type of organic system and the
degree of thickening or other properties desired.
In paints, for example, from 2 to 3.5 pounds per 100 gallons is recommended for a gloss
enamel, while a stipple paint may need between 6 and 9 pounds per 100 gallons of paint.
In cosmetics, dosage of 1 to 3% based on the total formulation weight, are effective for
introducing a thixotropic character and controlling syneresis in an end-product.
Similar dosage will also function as an auxiliary emulsifier in water/mineral oil systems.
